I prefer reading AU fanfiction, especially when it comes to shipping. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of really good fics where the characters are still countries, but I find that when I read fluffy canonverse fics, I find myself thinking “this is cute, but since the relationship is between two nations and political relationships are always changing, it probably won’t last long.” I think that the best canon shipping fics are ones that deal with how hard it would be for nations to be in love.
